Zimbabwe
Hundreds of Zimbabwen women protested against president Robert Mugabe on Saturday at Bulawayo by hitting symbolic empty pans to denounce inadequate food and serious economic difficulties.
The ‘beat the pot’ event was organised by the main opposition party- the Movement for Democratic change.
The women are adamant that Mugabe must go and give space for a new government after free and credible elections.
“We are not cooking anything any longer at home. This is why we brought these pots to say they are empty. We don’t have food to cook in these pots. Please Mugabe and ZANU-PF, can you please go?” Thokozani Khupe, Vice president of the MDC said. They have also promised to organise more protests if president Mugabe refuses to leave power.
Zimbabwe has been mired in a serious economic crisis since the beginning of the year 2000.
The strike actions have become more serious in the past weeks with a Zimbabwen pastor Evan Mawarire criticising Mugabe on social networks with backing from the Movement for Democratic change.
